EOC Exam Scoring
The PLTW End of Course assessments are best classified as single-level summative assessments. This assessment is designed specifically for the PBS course and is intended to measure student achievement (Nitko, 2004). The EoC assessment will be administered and scored online, and this will strengthen test security, enhance overall test reliability, and reduce the EoC testing time in the classroom. PLTW will report norm-referenced stanine scores for all End of Course assessments. These stanine scores will be referred to as “End of Course Scores”, and will range from one to nine. The stanine score scale is based on the theory that student achievement is distributed normally in a large enough population. When students take the tests, their scores will reflect their achievement levels and form a normal distribution of test scores. As seen in the figure to the right, the score distribution is then broken up into nine categories, ranging from 1 to 9, based on how many standard deviations the student’s score was from the mean. A score of 1 indicates student performance at the lowest level and a score of 9 indicates student performance at the highest level. The average student performance across the population is represented by a score of 5.

College Credit:
There is no guarantee that your son or daughter will receive college credit for their PLTW course work. However, for colleges that do accept PLTW courses for undergraduate credit, they require that the student must earn a stanine score of 7 or higher on the national PLTW End of Course exam to earn undergraduate credit (Stanine 9 = A, Stanine 8 = B, Stanine 7 = C) and generally the colleges require a B or higher in the PLTW course.
